7/14/2011, San Felipe, BC - With a deeply saddened heart, I write this letter to let you know that Sgt. Garcia of the Imperial County Coroner’s office called and inform Rachel and I, that our dear friend Steven “Dogman” Forman passed away yesterday at the age of 65, in El Centro while at the post office.

At this time, we are notifying people close to Steven and getting his dogs care and shelter.

We will be posting updates on the passing of Steven and of his organization ZAPP on his blog, http://www.sfzapp.com as they become available. Steven was very special to us, many of you, and to the Dogs of San Felipe. He will be DEEPLY MISSED!

There will be a celebration of Steven’s life on Wednesday, Oct 5 at the Pavilion at El Dorado Ranch.

DIVAS DRAG SHOW a Huge Success for ZAPP!

DIVAS Fund Raising Event for Spay/Neuter Project a HUGE Success...Once again the pros from LIPS Night Club in San Diego came to San Felipe to help raise money and awareness for ZAPP's Spay/Neuter Street Project in Mexico, and they were the best they've ever been in 5 years. ZAPP loves LIPS and Tootie & her "Girls."

Some folks in San Felipe have told me they only want to come to the Silent Auction to support ZAPP's Spay/Neuter Street Project; and rather than "shoot myself in the foot" and have a smaller turnout for the auction, I've made some logistical
changes to our format.
The Silent Auction, which will be jam packed with fantastic items to bid on, donated locally and also shipped in from the U.S., as well as loads of Mark's and my possessions will be in the PAVILION Restaurant. The Silent Auction will begin at 11am, and end precisely at 1:30pm.
There is NO Charge for the Auction only.
Tickets for DINING with the DIVAS are $15, with lunch not included.
Both lunch and the DIVAS SHOW will be held Cabaret style in the larger room with the stage.
Tickets for the Show are available at

and many other ZAPP volunteers around town.

San Felipe's "Throw Away Dogs" are everywhere!
Since the closing of the ZAPP Center (7.5 acres) and
San Felipe Animal Rescue (10 acres),
San Felipe's streets are full of mangy, malnourished and pregnant
dogs once again. Animal lovers and advocates alike who live here
are doing all they can to feed and sterilize these animals,
and all our funds are privately raised.

Two weeks ago Mexicali Animal Control rounded up
88 innocent animals and needlessly destroyed them.
And they will continue to so, as they have in the past, as long as
we don't aggressively intervene. There is no longer a safe place
for these dogs to live without the fear of abduction and death.

Our new Spay/Neuter Center in town is
our only hope! Fertility is the heart of our problem, and
I am committed to fixing 2400 dogs and cats in 2011.
That's 200 surgeries every month!

Because money is so hard to come by, we rely on our
ZAPP eBAY Shoe Store as the best chance of raising enough
funds to meet the budgetary requirements necessary.

So, if you're a "Shoe Addict" or know someone who is,
and you can't afford to send money,
then please send shoes so we can turn them into
the $6000 a month we need to pay for the

How to be Humane for the Holidays!

Since 2003 animal advocates and animal lovers alike have been working hard to end roundups and euthanasia in San Felipe. I’m sure we can all agree that the fertility of indigent and stray dogs and cats is the heart of our problem.
Mexico, and other countries south of the US border have been working backwards for years to get a handle on this problem. If we had a government run low to no cost spay/neuter project, our population would diminish steadily and naturally over the coming years, and roundups and senseless euthanasia would become a thing of the past.
ZAPP is trying really hard to surgically alter 200 dogs and cats every month at our new location. Where “loud speakers” cars going thru the neighborhoods of our town announcing upcoming clinics used to be very effective, I have come to the conclusion that we are no longer getting the bang for our buck that we once did. This past week I went to the local San Felipe radio station and from now on, three days prior to our upcoming clinics, we will do 18 radio spots announcing FREE Spay/Neuter surgeries for all Mexican animals. BTW, next clinic is December 11th.
The biggest source of income for our project is our eBAY Shoe Store which accepts resell-able donated men’s and women’s shoes from anyone. Shoes are then turned into money on eBAY so we can fund our spay/neuter project.
On Thanksgiving night, I traditionally watch CNN Heroes. Year after year I am inspired by the work people are doing throughout the United States and around the world. But mostly I am moved by what is done everyday to serve people and animals in third world countries, because here is where the results are the hardest to achieve. The government and the culture lags behind our vision for the community, and because money is unavailable, funding comes from expats and tourists alike who support the programs that benefit the community.
This year (2011) I am committed to spaying and neutering 2400 dogs and cats and raising enough money on eBAY to get the job done. No surprise to you I’m sure, the economy is working against us to raise the money we need to support our various projects here in San Felipe. That is why I’m seeking out product that I can turn into money to underwrite our program. Dr Tony Solis, our highly skilled Mexican vet here in San Felipe charges ZAPP a mere $30 per surgery for any animal; large, small, male, female, cat, dog, kitten or puppy, plus $10 for a full course of antibiotics post surgery.
Our new spay/neuter surgery center on Mar de Cortez, located next door to Fandango and a few doors from the People’s Gallery is now cranking up it’s eBAY business and accepting all donations---be it shoes, bags, clothing or consignment items in order to raise the $6000 a month it will take to do the 200 surgeries we are committed to doing every month under the watchful eye of Dr Tony Solis.
Our “Spays for Strays Silent Auction and Casino Event” at the Pavilion raised over $3000 on November 13th, for the ZAPP Street Project, and on Monday December 6th, from 1-5pm at RUMORS Bar & Grill in Playa de Oro, we will have another “FUN” Raiser called “SHOES, BLUES & LOTS ‘o HOLIDAY TUNES” starring Denny Flannigan and Derek Wille on keyboards, featuring Jim Manning on Guitar and Juri Lynn on Vocals. Entry into the Show is a pair or more of resell-able shoes for the project. If you cannot round up a pair of shoes, then the ticket price is $10, but does not include the awesome Holiday lunch and seasonal cocktails that RUMORS has planned for you.
On January 17th, 2011, TOOTIE & the Girls will be back again at the Pavilion with a brand new show called “DANCING WITH THE STARS” and I might add, the fourth annual Drag Show they’ve performed here in San Felipe at EDR. If you’ve never attended this show, then this year is the year to do it. TOOTIE says, “this will be the best show ever.” Tickets will be available starting in December.
So, if you’re a Shoe Addict (don’t be ashamed) and have a closet full of shoes, or know someone who does, please make it a point to gather them up and donate them to ZAPP so we can continue to save our stray and indigent animals from terror and senseless euthanasia. How's this for good news? On or about October 1st,
the ZAPP Spay/Neuter Street Project will resume regular spay/neuter
clinics at a new location. From now on, you can find ZAPP on
Mar de Cortez, right in between FANDANGO and ONE OF A KIND.
It's in the same strip mall with
the PEOPLE'S GALLERY and AMOR PROPERTIES.

It's been a long year for ZAPP filled with lots of disappointment
and as most of you know by now, the ZAPP Center is officially closed
to the public in its desert location. But, because the heart of all our
problems in San Felipe rests with fertility issues we must continue
spaying and neutering otherwise we will never ever get ahead of the
animal population problem we have, and we will never see the
end of roundups, which always end in the worst possible way.

Our new location is very economical to rent and offers a
considerable amount of storage space in the form of an attached
apartment in the back, so with some physical improvements inside,
we will be able to hold our first clinic on Saturday, October 16th,
and once again ZAPP will resume its commitment to
the animals and the people of San Felipe.

ZAPP will continue picking up the tab for the neediest
of animals Tuesday through Friday at Dr Solis's Animal Care Clinic
on Mar Caribe. Unfortunately, when the ZAPP Center's benefactor
closed down the desert location to the public, the open door policy
for any and all animals disappeared as well. That policy was
the hallmark of the ZAPP Center, and the only way to continue
to provide a safety net for animals in need is by offering
veterinary services to those who truly cannot afford it at Dr Solis's Clinic
where he can provide much needed medical care,
and ZAPP will pay the bill every Friday.

I know some of this information is confusing to you, but I assure you
that any confusion will clear itself up as word of ZAPP's work
and results continue to spread through town.

Spaying and Neutering and assisting animals in need has
always been at the forefront of ZAPP's mission since the project
began back in 2007. These fertility control clinics will once again
be low to no cost to the poorest and neediest in our community,
and ZAPP will continue to rely on private donations
in order to keep up this work.

In the beginning ZAPP will hold clinics as often as we can afford to,
with the goal of holding clinics at least twice a month or more.
The cost of a spay or neuter surgery is $30 for any animal,
and $10 for the course of antibiotics that Dr. Solis recommends
for aftercare. However, since the closing of the Center we
will return to a "catch and release" policy, which means
that any animal that is brought to us from the streets for sterilization
that does not have a home, will unfortunately be returned to the streets
to continue to live on its own. But at least it will not be able to reproduce,
and that is a positive step in the right direction..

ZAPP has no choice but to pursue this policy in light of the fact
that even though there are currently a total of 17.5 acres of land
that has been purchased and developed for animal rescue
over the past seven years in San Felipe, there is no one place
willing to accept these animals, and that includes puppies and kittens.
I think that's truly pathetic.

In a community effort such as this, people must realize that
ZAPP will be forced to refuse litters of puppies and kittens
as well as more mature dogs and cats unless we can successfully
develop a roster of foster homes to send these animals to
while we are searching for a more permanent situation.
That is simply the way it will have to be until we can spay and neuter
75% of the street population, and finally achieve
zero additional population growth.

to become a temporary foster care home. ZAPP will do everything
possible to find homes for puppies in the States or in San Felipe,
but we will always require an interim solution and depend
on the kindness and generosity of the community.

It continues to be up to us to improve the quality of life for
animals in this town. We need to BE the change WE want to SEE.

ZAPP Spay Neuter Street Project Update

Hi ZAPP Supporters,
Here's an update of what's happening here in San Felipe. Yesterday, I met with San Felipe's Dr. Antonio Solis, DVM, and he assured me that he is on board with resuming all the veterinary work associated with our spay/neuter street project, and will work every other Saturday to spay and neuter 50-60 dogs and cats.

But, in addition, as I explained in a previous email, we are also going to set up shop (be that as it may) smack dab in the middle of our poorest neighborhoods where we can meet local folks who are advocates for animals and population control as well. We will take advantage of our "shout out cars," San Felipe's main form of advertising which for a minimal amount of money will drive through the neighborhoods for as long as you need them announcing anything you wish to share. I do know that many Mexican folks simply need to be asked to help with this project and I'm certain will attend a planning meeting in their own neighborhood church or meeting hall.

I met with Alex Herrera yesterday, a local businessman and caregiver of 19 dogs, and he will also work with me and my dear friend and ZAPP supporter,
Vickie Silva to help get this project started.

Dr. Solis says he can do the first spay/neuter clinic in four weeks. Unfortunately, all the kennels, crates and pens, along with all other supplies that were originally owned by the project were put to use when we opened the ZAPP Center, and I'm not certain that I'll be able to get them back, so I'm going to begin calling other rescues and
shelters to see how they can help us.

I'm sad to say that the once "open door" policy of accepting any and all needy animals at ZAPP Center is no longer in play. I saw yesterday for myself, just how "locked down" the Center is, and saw the big sign on the gates that now says, "CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC" with no promise of ever changing the policy.

But we all know that our real problem lies in fertility, and if we can once again spay and neuter 100+ animals a month, especially from the poorest neighborhoods, then maybe someday we wont need to have roundups. In addition to fixing these animals we will also treat them for tick fever, mange, TVT (a venereal cancer) and also vaccinate puppies and adults. This is a good plan and I'm happy to once again be back to work.

EUTHANIZE or Not. What is your Opinion?

As you know, ZAPP Animal Center is against euthanizing animals, unless circumstances are dire. What do you think constitutes a dire circumstance in the context of Mexico? Do you think dogs that are antisocial, and display aggressive behavior when placed in a pack mentality should be put down? Do you think that these dogs deserve to be rehabilitated or socialized?

ZAPP is a "no-kill" shelter, and San Felipians, especially Americans, living here have worked hard for years to get Mexicali Animal Control and other officials to work with us, by adjusting their policies regarding roundups and the euthanizing of dogs after said roundups. San Felipians should be proud of the strides we've made in that regard , because now dogs that are rounded up are brought to us alive, and we are committed to keeping them safe and out of harm's way..As you might know by now, after the last roundup in San Felipe on June 17th, which brought 93 additional dogs to our gates, which we gladly accepted, we did have some serious behavioral problems, primarily because we were not ready for this many dogs, and we were not physically capable of accommodating these dogs in a way that best served all our animals.

That is to say, that at the time of that roundup ZAPP already had 250+ dogs, and after the 93 that were brought to us, our population exploded, and we were forced to integrate dogs into runs and kennels that we would have otherwise never done. Some really aggressive fighting broke out and we had some injuries and wounds to treat. Let us not forget that these are dogs, and as such they were just doing what dogs do naturally in their own culture.

In our opinion, we know the fighting was a result of overcrowding, and once we removed the "antagonists" from the situation, the fighting ceased. Sadly, because of a lack of additional kennel space, which has now been almost totally addressed, and after much discussion, our choice was to release the few dogs that were causing the problems. Some have said, "why didn't you call Dr. David Ibarra from Mexicali Animal Control" so he could take these dogs from us, but we thought that was a death sentence for these dogs, for sure. Maybe we were wrong. I assure you that these dogs which came from the streets of San Felipe, were released back into the streets and we felt certain and still do that they would survive just fine as they always had. It was never our intention to starve or cause harm to any of these animals by releasing them into the desert, but just to do the right thing for the greater good of all the dogs concerned. We also believe that once these dogs were given their freedom as it were, and removed from that pack mentality, that they were less likely to be a threat to other dogs that are more submissive and vulnerable that they might encounter.

I've received many thoughtful and provocative emails on this subject, from fans and detractors alike. Many of these emails chastised me in particular, saying we should definitely have euthanized these dogs, or that what we did was truly unconscionable, or saying we definitely did the right thing. Based on what you know, or have heard about our situation in Mexico, what do you think should be the policy of an animal rescue in Mexico that is committed to the humane treatment of animals? No matter what your opinion, I want to hear it. This is definitely a discussion worth having, in light of the problems ZAPP Center has been facing.Please tell me what you think by responding to this email address, or weighing in on our FACEBOOK Fan Page with your feedback. Leo is Right. We're in way over our heads!

(this verse and subsequent verses in this email come from a poem,
written anonymously, entitled "I am an Animal Rescuer."
For so many of us, these words are our mantra).

I have bought dog food with my last dime.
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.
I have hugged animals that are withdrawn and frightened.
I have fallen in love a thousand times.
I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
too many times too count....

The following advice comes from Leo Grillo,
after he cut his funding of the ZAPP Animal Center.
"Don't accept roundup dogs,"
and "stop taking dogs at your gates."
"You've turned into a dog pound."
This advice coming from a man who has been
an animal rescuer for thirty years.

If maybe Leo had visited San Felipe to see where
his money was going, if nothing else,
he might have seen that this small town,
like so many other Mexican
towns is a living, breathing dog pound.
The only difference is that ZAPP is surrounded by chain link.

He also says, "you're enabling the public
by accepting their unwanted, sick dogs, so they don't
have to take responsibility for their animals."

Do you know, that we get dogs brought to us with ropes
imbedded in their necks that have to be surgically removed,
because they were tied up when they were
puppies and the rope was never exchanged for a collar.

I'll tell you one thing that Leo said that is true.
ZAPP Animal Center is in way over its head.
The last roundup on June 17th, brought 99 more
dogs to ZAPP's gates. (6 puppies were born upon arriving).

Two weeks ago, the day after that roundup,
Leo actually sent spies onto the property
to judge and evaluate us.
Then the spies reported back to him at DELTA in Acton.
Two bored, local women, who apparently have nothing better to do
with their time but to show up announced at ZAPP,
and invalidate the good we are doing.
This, the day after the roundup when the site was in total chaos.
We had just received 99 terrified animals.
Shame on you ladies!

My job is to assist these creatures.
I was born with a drive to fulfill their needs.
We take in helpless, unwanted,
homeless creatures, without planning or selection.

So many of our supporters continually send donations.
It's to the point where I have to send out multiple emails
in a week just to keep us afloat, because our funding was cutoff.
Come Fall when the tourist season kicks off again, we'll
be able to hold fund raising events that will make a big
difference to our cash flow.

We're just people who love animals,
and are committed to a mission that does not allow us to kill needlessly.
Some folks say, maybe you should just put them all down.
After all, they're only dogs.
Wouldn't that just be easier and more efficient?
There was a time when Hitler thought that was a good idea
for certain people, but how many were affected by that insanity?

I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done.
My home is never quiet.
My wallet is always empty,
but my heart is always full.

I made a promise to myself when I arrived in Mexico
in 2003. I promised that I would help to elevate
the quality of life for animals in San Felipe.
I'm proud of what I've done, and I'm proud of what we all stand for.
ZAPP will keep up the fight.

We now have a new connection at a pet food bank,
and although we do pay a fee for each palette of food,
we now have enough to get us through the next 3-4 weeks.
Thanks also to Canidae Food Company for their donations.
We now have shade for all our kennels.
We have 42 swimming pools for the dogs to cool off in,
and we are currently adding more kennels to eliminate crowding.
Our cats are safe in a large space with heavily screened windows,
and electric and water is finally on the way.

I promised the staff today, that in the next month we would place
100 animals into homes in the United States,
with the help of various shelters and rescues.
This is not an easy task in the current economy, when folks are having
to surrender their pets to local shelters because of foreclosures.

ZAPP will continue to forge ahead, and continue to do the best
we can for the dogs and cats of San Felipe. After all,
it's what folks just like us stand for all over the world.
And remember, if you don't stand for something,
you'll fall for anything.

40 New Swimming Pools & 9 New Dog Runs for ZAPP

Dogman Here! Happy to tell you that the 99 new dogs (93+ 6 puppies that were born since the mama arrived arrived at ZAPP on Thursday) are settling in everywhere on site and we are building 9 new shaded runs...three will be 25' X 25' and 6 will be smaller, and for more aggressive animals that need to socialized, but still segregated...also, I'm going to LA Wednesday and Thursday to pick up 40 hard plastic kiddie swimming pools from CalSplash for all our existing dog runs, as well as a large donation of new shoes for eBay. A really sweet woman named Giselle, and her friends from a group called "Avec Mes Amis" did a big garage sale for ZAPP in LA last weekend and raised nearly $2000, which paid for the pools and is also getting us started on the new chain link runs and kennels. So good news for ZAPP's dogs. All 11 infant kitties are doing well under Carolanne's watchful eye, so onward and upward. We're cool, but need more money. Woof! Woof! Woof!

Surprise Roundup Yields 93 Dogs & 11 Kittens

A SURPRISE ROUNDUP this morning yields 93 more dogs and 11 kittens at ZAPP. Anyone who has extra dog and cat food laying around, or anyone who wants to do some bottle feeding of itty bitty kittens, please let us know right away. I called my guys at CANIDAE for emergency rations of food, because Martine tells me we'll never have enough food beyond Wednesday. I'm currently in the process of getting the remaining 39 dogs from the last roundup of 84 in April transported to the States, so we barely had enough room for these guys. But we're happy to have them---at least they're safe and both our vets can treat them all and get them fixed. That brings out total to 356 dogs and puppies and 37 cats and kittens. San Felipe's Mayor, Hazael Castillo was at the site when the 4 animal control trucks arrived as well as Dr David Ibarra from Mexicali Animal Control. We have really come a long way, and everyone now seems to be on the same page.

In addition to the Salsa Competition on July 3rd at PDO, don't miss Mark Dille's First Annual Memorial BBQ Fundraiser at the ZAPP Animal Center site, the following Friday, July 9th, 4-7pm called "Hot Diggety Dog!" July 9th would have been Mark's 63rd Birthday, so expect the food to be even better than what Mark would have made himself, because somehow I know he'll be there and it will be Divine! A Trip to CANIDAE Yields More Than 1/2 a Ton of Food.

This time I got in my truck and drove to CANIDAE Dog Food Company in Norco California myself. I had a real nice trip and quite frankly had never heard of Norco. What a great town! Devoted to horses and the folks that love them. There were trails everywhere. I got to CANIDAE's offices around 3pm and had some time to visit. I was certainly not amazed to find at least 20 staff pets roaming free from office to office. I felt like I was at ZAPP Center and right at home. The guys were so friendly and accomodating. They proceeded to load my truck with 1500 pounds of food. That's about 40 bags, which believe it or not will last about 12 days. The CANIDAE Race Team will be here in Baja again for the Baja 500 in June. Thanks Scott Whipple and Carl Boley---once again you've rescued our rescue!!!

After 37 years of friendship and love,
my pal Mark Dille has passed away.
It happened on Wednesday,
May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, 2010,
here at our house in San Felipe.
Mark had a lengthy battle with cancer, which unfortunately ended his life. He worked hard to overcome it, but cancer has its own agenda, and has the power to take you where it wants you to go. That was the case for dear sweet Mark.
Without Mark's support over the years, there are many things I would not have set out to do. ZAPP Animal Center is one of those things.
Mark had an uncanny ability to create order where I could not---which is why he was so much apart of the creation of this humane project.
Mark had an insane wit and sense of humor that I will probably
miss more than his lasagna and meat loaf. Here he is
Halloween 2008 as "Marge." He went to work that day at
Playa de Oro, and really couldn't understand why folks were staring at him.
Mark's dogs now live at ZAPP where they are cared for and nurtured by our wonderful staff.
Mark's wish was to see beautiful shade trees all over the site to shelter ZAPP's dogs, so it's his wish that begins this campaign to plant trees
at ZAPP Animal Center where the summer heat and humidity will be unbearable for the dogs.

A donor by the name of Leo Grillo phoned me in August of that year to see if I was interested in being funded by DELTA Rescue, Mr Grillo's organization in Acton, California. This is a true story, beginning in August 2009 until now. The narrative covers the period between August 2009 and now. It's too long, but a great read. ZAPP Animal Center is dedicated to Mark Dille, my life partner of 37 years, who is in the next room right now, in the final stages of cancer."

On a Tuesday, back in August of last year, I was working in my office and my phone rang. It was a call from a man in Los Angeles, who wanted to know if I had some time to talk. He told me he Googled me and found out about all the work ZAPP Spay/Neuter Project had been doing in San Felipe. He wanted to know if I might be interested in running a satellite location for his group DELTA Rescue, here in San Felipe.

I was in LA by Friday. Leo met me in his black Lincoln SUV at the local McDonald's, and I followed him to his sanctuary. Leo and I were met at the gates by an armed guard. He parked the SUV, and we transferred to a golf cart. We began our tour of DELTA.

More than 100 acres of pristine land in the mountains. Dog runs everywhere, complete with straw bale dog houses. Manmade lakes, horses, goats, ravens and ducks, everywhere you looked. Leo said he currently had 600 dogs on site, and over 750 cats living in five catteries. He runs a first class veterinary hospital on site, and he told me he had a staff of more than seventy.

After the tour we went back to Leo's office where we spent several hours talking about rescuing animals. He is a devoted rescuer and a conservationist, and has focused primarily on trapping abandoned wilderness dogs and cats. He's been doing it for years. I was so grateful to Leo for this generous gift to the animals of San Felipe, and I honored his work to save animals every way I could.

A little history. Back in April of 2009, San Felipe had two back to back street roundups prior to the Easter Holiday and Spring Break. The first one netted 59 dogs, and the second, 117 dogs. After ZAPP's attorney, Carmen Nuñez intervened on our behalf, we were able to get the first 59 dogs back safely, but not the 117. Unfortunately, they were euthanized.
The 59 dogs were thankfully relocated to the States.

Tourists and American residents were horrified. Those who know me, know that I had been saying for a long time, that if only I had a large space where I could house the dogs from the streets, and keep them safe from roundups, I would be one happy "dogman."

Well, Leo Grillo put the opportunity right in my lap. In fact, he gave me $255,000 between September 2009 and February 2010, to open ZAPP Animal Center.The only thing he wanted in return was for us to deliver abandoned desert dogs to him in LA regularly. He said he had room for 1000 dogs, but because of attrition at his "care for life" sanctuary, he had plenty of space available,
and could take up to 400 more dogs from San Felipe.

I contacted ZAPP's attorney, Carmen Nuñez, and retained her on behalf of this project. After forming a Mexican Civil Association with tax exemption, it now became ZAPP's duty to take in all the dogs and cats that needed our help.

With Leo's okay we purchased over seven acres in the desert. We surrounded the property with chain link fence. We bought a 24'X45' building to be used as our clinic, and two double wide mobile homes for staff. We built 20 runs with straw bale houses just like DELTA. I hired staff, and got some solar power to get the clinic running until electric and water were brought in. Leo was kept abreast of everything we did. I sent updates and newsletters with photos and documentation. Carmen was always in touch with Leo's attorney in LA, and everything was great.

Leo assured me that as DELTA's satellite location, ZAPP Center would always be supported and we would get $10,000 a month for operating expenses indefinitely. The animals of San Felipe would enjoy a better life, and we would live happily ever after.

Something happened though, and to this day I'm not quite sure what, but our last infusion of cash was on February 22nd, 2010. For ten weeks we have been on our own financially. We were left with no money for food, vet supplies or salaries. It appears that Leo did not inform his Board of Directors of his plans,
and the monthly plug was pulled on the ZAPP Center.

All of us involved in ZAPP Center celebrate animals. We know everyday how much good we are doing for them in San Felipe. Through the generosity of donors and supporters everywhere, we've been able to keep ZAPP's doors open through this period.

But now we are desperate for financial support. Going public for help is my only option to save ZAPP Animal Center. I've tried everything to get Leo to honor his promise. But now, I have no choice but to use the media and press,
the Internet, YouTube and Facebook to find help. otherwise
ZAPP will have to shut down.

I will continue to raise as much money as I can to keep us viable, but constant infusions of cash and food are needed.

ZAPP has 200 amazing animals living on site, and more coming each day. Our vets handle emergencies seven days a week and our clinic has become a small source of revenue. We don't have electricity or running water, but there's lots of awesome work being done around the world under far worse conditions.

No doubt about it! We have been abandoned in Baja,
but with the ongoing help and support of folks like you,
we'll continue to work and make a difference in the lives of
San Felipe's dogs and cats, some of the most undervalued animals I've ever seen. People hit them with their cars just for sport. They're starved, abused, and considered expendable by many. Please continue to help us.
And Leo, you left me no other choice.

It's been about a month since our donor bailed on us,
and even with donated dog food coming in nearly
every day here in San Felipe, its still costing us

and more are scheduled for adoption next weekend.

Our Donor has ended our
Monthly Funding.

OMG! What do we do now? Our generous donor who funded
the entire 7.5 acre ZAPP Animal Center project
has stopped giving us our monthly allowance. This allowance covered all our expenses, including dog and cat food, salaries for staff, including two full time vets, supplies, gas for our generators, paper towels, bleach, water delivery, and anything else
you can think of that a full service
animal rescue requires daily.

ZAPP is doing the most important work for animals ever in San Felipe, and the entire staff and I are bound and determined to continue this work, and get thru this bump in the road.

Our funding stopped nearly 3 weeks ago, and although we are negotiating with our donor and trying to come up with
a workable solution, for now we are totally BROKE!

As in we have no money for dog or cat food, no money for puppy shots and vaccines, no money for salaries---the only money we have currently is what is generated by our eBAY Shoe Store
and the monthly subscribers in our Financial Friends Program.

Both my partner Mark and I have used all our Social Security funds to cover salaries up until now, but of course,
have to wait till next month for more....

Our payroll alone was $1550 a week, but we've made dramatic adjustments, including some staff working for FREE, and now payroll is down to $700 a week. Everyone has taken dramatic cuts, and we've also gotten some Mexican workers from the nearby Rehab Center who are "work horses" and very affordable.

We've contacted "CANIDAE DOG FOOD", the Best Dog Food Company in the world to see if they can donate to us and
deliver to our storage unit in the states. Then we can hand out keys to volunteers and they can bring a few bags
down every time they go up to shop.

We currently have about 190 dogs, including 79 puppies,
and twenty cats; this after we just took in 84 dogs
from the round up San Felipe held last week.

A Watershed Event in San Felipe for Dogs!

In an Unprecedented
Act of Compassion,
Mexicali Animal Control
did their Annual Easter
Round Up Today,
and delivered 84 dogs to
ZAPP Animal Center for Care.

Gratitude to Dr. David Ibarra, Director of Animal Control in Mexicali, and San Felipe Delegado, Hazael Sierra Castillo, for agreeing to bring these 84 innocent stray and indigent street dogs to ZAPP Animal Center after today's annual Semana Santa (Holy Week) Roundup.

As you know, in the past, lots of terrified animals have been taken to Animal Control for euthanasia after the roundup. If you don't know, Mexicali no longer electrocutes, but now uses sedation as its
preferred method of sacrificing animals.

All of us who care deeply for dogs in San Felipe, and for animals everywhere are so grateful for this cooperative effort,
and the professional way in which
the entire Animal Control Staff worked today.

We're also grateful that this useless killing of San Felipe's street dogs will finally end. All you animal advocates out their reading this, please help support this remarkable change of events
in any way you can.

These animals will all need treatment for various diseases~~~many have mange, and many have TVT, a veneral cancer that responds well to chemotherapy~~~and they'll all need to be spayed and neutered and fully vaccinated before making the trip
out of Mexico for adoption and placement in the States.

ZAPP's Stray and Indigent Animal Surgery Program relies heavily
on donations of money and sales in our eBay Shoe Store to keep this program running. We employ a staff of six, including two
full time vets who are on call 24/7.

All any of us want is a better quality of life for these innocents, and now these 84 will have it. Thanks also to Bill and Carol Spradlin of San Felipe Home Builders, and our attorney Carmen Nuñez for playing key rolls in helping to heal the divide between San Felipe
and Mexicali on this sensitive issue. Also thanks to ZAPP's staff~~~you guys were all amazing today. I'm very proud!

All of us are soooo excited to be opening the all new full service ZAPP Animal Center this coming Wednesday, December 9th. Watch for a very large sign going up on the highway heading south toward the Arches, that will guide you to the new location. It's exactly two miles off the road. At our new seven and a half acre site, we'll be able to care for, protect and nurture dogs, cat, horses, puppies, kittens and any other animals that are in need. We'll also have 24 hour urgent care services directed by Dr Antonio Solis DVM, board and care for travelers and pets, an adoption center, and an assisted living section for geriatric dogs and cats to safely live out their lives in peace and comfort. We'll do grooming, and will be fully staffed 24/7. Please stop by and drop off anything you think we might be able to use for this new project. We look forward to fully serving the community and its animals for many years to come.

San Felipe Animals Win Mexican Lottery!!!

If you are reading this email, then it must be after 2pm, on Tuesday,
October 13th, because that's when we closed the land deal on the new
ZAPP Animal Care Center. The NEW Center is 7.5 acres, or 3 hectares, in Mexican speak, and is located in San Felipe; just two miles
off the highway going south toward town.
We will open the NEW facility for animal business in early November,
and I'm so excited, I could just "plotz!"

With the help of an anonymous donor from California, who himself has been providing care and solace to dogs, cats, birds, horses, ducks and pigs for more than 30 years, ZAPP is so honored and humbled that this man chose us to expand his vision by opening this satellite location in San Felipe.

The ZAPP Animal Care Center will have an open door policy for any and all dogs, cats, puppies, kittens---or any other animals that need care and safety because of injury or abandonment. Our mission is to remove all at risk animals from jeopardy, and provide a safe, loving environment
that improves their quality of life.

In addition to being a shelter and rescue, ZAPP will also continue its spay/neuter program in San Felipe. The Center will also be a rehabilitation and adoption facility, for puppies, kittens, and special needs animals. Assisted living kennels for geriatric animals that are less adoptable will also be part of our Center. Initially, many of these older animals may be transported to our sister sanctuary in California. ZAPP is a "no-kill" facility, and unless circumstances are dire, we will adhere to that policy.

The ZAPP Animal Care Center will also provide Board and Care services for local travelers; and, can you believe it, grooming services, too. And although a "lofty" goal, we will do everything possible to have 24 hour urgent care services. We are also committed to holding workshops and classes on-site for students in our community, in an effort to teach everything we can about humane animal treatment and population control.

As part of our agreement, our donor is underwriting everything involved in running a complete animal rescue, and I mean everything, but he will not be assuming financial responsibility for ZAPP's Spay/Neuter Program. That program will continue to be funded thru private monthly donations and local fundraising events.

Here are some numbers that illustrate what it costs ZAPP each month to spay and neuter 100 dogs and cats at $30 per animal.

ZAPP currently has 91 monthly subscribers
in our ZAPP Financial Friends Program.
The cost of spaying and neutering 100 animals a month is $3000.
The cost of producing each individual clinic is about $200, including advertising. The total amount of all monthly donations thru
the Financial Friends Program is currently $1185.
ZAPP does have other monthly expenses as well
which are paid out of these donations.

Like everyone else, the economy has hit us hard, and this year I'm staying off the streets of San Felipe and not trying raise money as aggressively as I have in the past. The competition among non-profits in San Felipe doing great work is fierce, with all of us out there fighting for the same $20 donation from folks
who live on fixed incomes.

The ZAPP CENTER will be open
In NO TIME at all!

We have located and are purchasing 7.4 acres just two miles off the highway, north of the Arches; the title is clear, water and electricity are handled, and we are about to open the ZAPP Center for Adoptions, Rehabilition and Rescue. We will have an open door policy for dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, and our main goal is to get all these animals off the streets, and out of jeopardy! Many will be transitioned to shelter and rescue facilities in California where they will find permanent loving homes; some geriatrics will live out there lives at the ZAPP Center in our Assisted Living Section, and the rest will go to a sister end of life sanctuary in southern California, where I’m sure they will think that they’ve hit the lottery when they see their new digs!

We’re very excited about the new facility, and look forward to being able to work with local San Felipe residents in a community effort to provide care and solace to all dogs and cats that need protection and help.

Dr Antonio Solis will continue to work with ZAPP. Not sure yet if we will do surgeries at the Center initially, or continue to work thru his office in town, or maybe both. We will also have a Vet Tech/Nurse on Staff, and are also planning to run a Board and Care Section for travelers, with grooming available, as well as 24 hour emergency services, where we can offer critical care for animals in need.

After being involved in humane animal work in San Felipe for the past six years, things have changed a lot. We have noticed a big difference in attitude when it comes to the relationship between pet and owner in Mexico. At ZAPP spay/neuter clinics in San Felipe, Mexicans line up with their pets, because many now see the importance of population control, and also see what ultimately happens to unwanted puppies and kittens who do not get adopted.

Many people among the nearly 4000 I email regularly in the USA tell me that one of main reasons they choose not to visit Mexico, is because they simply cannot handle the lack of respect for animals they witness in the culture. But I assure you, that is changing, especially in areas where groups like ZAPP continue to work hard to improve the quality of life for stray and indigent dogs and cats in Mexico. Animal lovers and advocates applaud Mexicali for choosing the higher road when it comes to humane euthanasia of these precious innocents who did nothing wrong and deserve our respect, both in life and in death.

MHTA / Mexico for the Humane Treatment of Animals
a Network of Animal Lovers in Baja

I’ve been living in San Felipe since July of 2003, and as many of my friends know, I came here to retire and pursue my passion for dogs. I arrived in San Felipe with five of my own, and although many have since passed, I still have six dogs that I live with, five of which are local San Felipe rescues.
BTW, groups that focus on population control and care of cats are so needed in Baja. They almost have to operate independently, because of the scope of the cat overpopulation problem and the cost involved.
I co-founded San Felipe Animal Rescue in 2003, and after separating from SFAR in 2007, formed a group called ZAPP, which is an acronym for the “Zero Additional Pup-ulation Project”, which focuses almost entirely on controlling the stray and indigent dog population of San Felipe, by holding ongoing spay/neuter clinics.
I discovered that getting a program such as ZAPP off the ground in Mexico was no easy feat. I was always aware of all the great work being done in Northern Baja by other rescues, shelters and spay/neuter groups. Not to mention all the folks that travel the streets of Mexico feeding and watering strays. You Go, guys! I thought, “wouldn’t it be great for all of us to have a forum where we could speak out and exchange ideas each month”----Mexicans and Americans alike!.
And then it happened! In June, a group of us from San Felipe met with other from Mexicali and San Luis for our first meeting at the University in Mexicali, with the hope of very soon expanding our membership to include rescues and shelters from Encenada, Tijuana, Rosarito and Tecate’. We call ourselves MHTA, Mexico for the Humane Treatment of Animals, and we are a group of like minded individuals who are committed to raising awareness and having an impact on policies that exist in parts of Baja that we are at odds with.
Number one on the agenda is ending electrocution as the preferred protocol for euthanasia in Mexicali; also, we are focused on just how to initiate low or no cost spay/neuter programs throughout northern Baja with the possible involvement of the Government; we are also seeking out ways to enforce existing laws on the books that deal with animal abuse in Baja, and of course, instituting a long overdue education program for young people in San Felipe, by bringing Spanish language classes to schools and community centers that address care and respect for animals. Mexicali is involved in humane education, and we continually share back and forth with those already doing it regularly.
Good things are starting to happen for us as a result of networking, especially since a revolutionary new social networking site was started by animal advocate Shawn Santos, from San Diego. I am very excited to announce that the first meeting of MHTA, MEXICO for the HUMANE TREATMENT of ANIMALS is now scheduled for Saturday, June 27th, at 12 Noon in Mexicali. In order to avoid the risk of giving directions that will only confuse you, we're meeting between 11:30-11:45am in the parking lot of COSTCO in Mexicali. We will then caravan to the meeting location.

This is the first meeting of its kind in Baja. Hopefully, we will hold another meeting soon after in Rosarito, for the benefit of Ensenada, Tijuana and Tecate'. This first meeting will include members of ZAPP and GENTE POR LOS ANIMALES, a like minded group of animal advocates from Mexicali, and do the same kind of work as ZAPP.

Also, Shawn Santos, founder of HOPE ANIMAL NETWORK, a brand new social networking internet group, committed to the humane treatment of animals, will be there to present his video webcast that was shown on the internet June 2nd. At this first meeting we will do lots of brainstorming; we'll address EUTHANASIA without ELECTROCUTION, and discuss education for schools and the marketing of this new network group; all in an effort to increase awareness of MHTA's presence, and also with the goal of ultimately ending the inhumane treatment of animals in Mexico.

LEONA!!! A Wonderful Story!

A few of months ago, when Leona was just a very little girl, it appears that someone with an evil sense of humor decided to disfigure this little boxer cross puppy. Not only were her ears cut off, but her nose was removed. I know, you'd really prefer not to hear about this, but there is no way to her the story, except to make it even worse, and I don't want to go there.

After I sent an email out looking for a suitable home for Leona, I got lots of response. Our very own puppy lady, Carole Kingaby, who is always a very easy mark, took Leona temporarily, until the right person came along; and even then I knew that Carole just might not want to part with her. But you know what Carole said...."If I don't let her go, then I won't have room at my house for another puppy in need." Love that!

Last Monday, Leona and I, met up with Lizette Schley, a very committed animal lover from LA, that drove all the way to San Diego to meet Leona, and take her home.

The ZAPP Animal Care Center now open since December 14th, 2009, has an open door policy for any and all dogs, cats, puppies, kittens—or any other animals that need care and safety because of injury or abandonment. In fact, as stated in our charter, we are obligated to serve this community by rescuing and accepting all animals that are brought to our gates, and all dogs that are picked up during roundups.

The Center will be a rehabilitation and adoption facility for puppies, kittens, and special needs animals. ZAPP's mission is to remove all at-risk animals from jeopardy, and provide a safe, loving environment that improves their quality of life.

In addition to being a shelter and rescue, ZAPP also runs a a shoe store that raises funds on eBAY, (link to the right and below) and does lots of events, shows, terrific raffles, and has a monthly subscription program called "Financial Friends of ZAPP". More about that on our donation page.

SPAY/NEUTER UPDATE!

Events that happened in March and April, including two dog round-ups netting 162 animals, was to say the least, a real trauma for animal lovers in San Felipe. Sadly, 110 dogs were euthanized in Mexicali, but the 52 dogs from the first round-up ZAPP rescued were all re-located to beautiful facilities in San Diego, except for 3 that are currently on chemo therapy for cancer. After those 3 complete treatment, they too will go to San Diego to secure loving homes.

For the past 4-5 weeks ZAPP has been re-evaluating the program and our committment in San Felipe, and here’s what I've have come up with.

Beginning on June 12th, ZAPP, and our vet, Dr Antonio Solis will be begin holding Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinics every Friday at Dr Solis's office here in San Felipe. ZAPP will subsidize up to $1500 a month to help locals with spay/neuter costs. We will publish money saving coupons in Mexican papers, and distribute these coupons throughout Mexican owned businesses in San Felipe.

These coupons will be worth $20 each, and can be used against a $30 spay/neuter surgery, including an antibiotic regimen that goes home with the dog, and suture removal 7-10 days later. Pet owners in town who want their animals fixed will be asked to pay the remaining $10 when presenting a valid coupon at the clinic. These coupons are for locals only, and Americans will be asked to make a reasonable donation to help cover costs. With ZAPP's committment to a $1500 monthly donation, will still fix up to 75 animals a month.

Another posting will follow soon with information about our mission to end electrocution as the preferred method of euthanasia in Mexicali. Currently in Northern Baja, Mexicali is the only city using this protocol. Tijuana, Ensenada, Rosarito and Tecate all use far more humane methods of sedation to put dogs to sleep.

This is Steven Forman from ZAPP in San Felipe, and this is the latest, very sad news, no pictures, from writer Sharon St. Joan, Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. I waited one full day before sending this information out, because of how hard we all worked to avoid this. Before you read, please know that we were told, that out of respect to Americans living in Mexico, these dogs were not electrocuted, but humanely euthanized by injection. Welcome to the world of animal rescue in Mexico.

I am now working directly with Jessica Higgins, of HSI (Humane Society International) in Washington D.C., to address the issue of 30 out of 31 Mexican States still engaged in the practice of electrocution as a form of euthaniasia in Mexico. Also, Jessica Higgins is investigating and seeking information of just what conclusive data and test results were used to determine that anyone legitimately died as a result of contact with dogs in Mexicali. Mexican press is causing panic among residents, and forcing them to put their pets in the streets. Another roundup is scheduled in San Felipe for April 17th. Mexicali is euthanizing 40 dogs everyday as we speak.

We may have lost this battle, but I assure you we will not loose the War!!!

They Did a RoundUp Anyway!

Even though we had a signed agreement with our Mayor, in San Felipe, Hazael Sierra Castillo, that no more round ups would take place until we had an agreement, he and other officials in Mexicali have decided that a second roundup of street dogs will happen tomorrow, April 7th.

As you know, we worked hard this week to get the dogs back that were rounded up last Thursday, and we paid 9,600 pesos for their return, and traveled up to Mexicali with many volunteers and many trucks to transport them to the SFAR site in Las Minitas.

It appears, that the Mayor of Mexicali is making a visit to San Felipe on Wednesday, April 8th, to see our town during Holy Week, and I suppose these animals are just an eyesore.

ZAPP's attorney, Carmen Nuñez and I have worked all afternoon today, after finding out about this around 4pm, to get this action stopped. But it's going to happen anyway.

Our Mayor tells us that they will do the roundup as planned, but, here's the caviat! They will take the dogs to Mexicali for 15 days, not execute them, and allow us time to secure a facility, other than San Felipe Animal Rescue, which is already full, and then return them to us. We cannot afford to pay for their return, or travel again to Mexicali with a large group of people and vehicles. All this may be lies too, so we just have to wait and see!

San Felipe Animal Lovers Prevail.

I received a call this afternoon from ZAPP's attorney, Carmen Nuñez, informing me that Mexicali Animal Control is releasing our 53 dogs (one more was picked up by its owner) that were abducted last Friday during a "roundup" that was destined to result in the euthanasia of any dogs that were not claimed.

This is not only a victory for the dogs, but it's also a victory for all of us that are committed to the life and well being of all animals, and who abhor needless euthanasia.

San Felipe's Mayor, Hazael Sierra Castillo is committed to working with ZAPP in the future, and after we sign documents tomorrow, we will be assured that no "roundups" will happen in the future without our involvement; and no more dogs will have to be traumatized in this inhumane way ever again!

I knew you wanted this information as quickly as possible,
and I'm happy to be the messenger.
ZAPP and SFAR are both"no-kill" organizations,
so avoiding needless euthaniasia at any cost,

This past Tuesday, March 17th, ZAPP held the annual St Patty's Day Feast, and Dance Party at Ocotillo to benefit our spay & neuter project. Fortunately or unfortunately, the guests were much more interested in eating and talking, than they were in dancing. We presold 145 tickets before the event, and sold 82 more tickets at the door, for a total of 227 meals. To say the least, we were under prepared for the turnout. Chef Mark Dille ran the kitchen, along with Irene Smith, Joannie Rude, Alayne & Charlie Havener and Laurie Barszcz. It was non-stop from the beginning till the end. No buffet lines and waiting at this event. As soon as everyone got a seat, they were fed by a super group of servers. The bar was run by award winning bartender, Marcie Parra, and I guess folks are still raving about her margaritas. Micro Brewed "Rolling Man Red Irish Ale" was donated by Baja Brewers Home Brew Club and enjoyed by all. We're looking forward to next year, for sure!!!

Each month the writers for Mexico Living Magazine dig deep for creative ideas that tie into the monthly theme of the upcoming issue. This month, however, is a no-brainer for me. The theme of the February issue is house and garden, and unfortunately, I have had some friends with small breed dogs and puppies who have encountered some serious health problems resulting from the ingestion of insecticides and plants here in San Felipe.
Last year, a good friend watched as her eight week old Pomeranian puppy died violently after the dog was exposed to pesticides sprayed at her house---even though the exterminator assured her the product was safe. And just a few weeks ago, other friends had their seven pound Chihuahua mix exposed to insecticide on their property. The dog became very ill, began throwing up, became lethargic, and they thought they were going to lose her. Quick thinking took them to the vet where she was put on an IV drip so that she didn’t get too dehydrated; very quick, smart thinking.
Had they not done that, she probably would have died. It was touch and go for five or six days, and during that period, no matter what they fed her, she threw it up. Now, this is a dog that has had all her shots, so we knew we weren’t dealing with Parvo or Distemper, which are usually fatal diseases in puppies and small dogs under four pounds. After lots of intravenous fluids, electrolytes and Nutri-Cal, a hi-calorie, thick toothpaste type product that comes in a tube, she began to round the corner and survived.
She is back to normal now, but I assure you, that this is the exception to the rule. Dogs, puppies and kittens that are most vulnerable, are often very small, with very tiny young immune systems that absolutely do not tolerate toxins, such as insecticides and some very popular, innocent looking plants.
Be especially careful before you decide to spray your house, or hire an exterminator. Do some research, check the internet, find out what the active ingredients are in the product you or your exterminator is using. Your precious animals are extremely vulnerable, and I promise you, when living in another country like Mexico, we need to do the due diligence, and be responsible for our choices, no matter what anyone tells you.
Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and ASPCA Senior Vice President, has done the research, and here is a list of plants that are the most common and potentially dangerous to your pets. Lilies, Sago Palm, Tulip/Narcissus bulbs, Azalea/Rhododendron, Oleander, Castor Bean, Cyclamen, Kalanchoe, Yew, Amaryllis, Autumn Crocus, Chrysanthemum, English Ivy, Peace Lily (AKA Mauna Loa Peace Lily), Pothos and Schefflera.
This list might shed some light on why your small dogs experience gastric problems, diarrhea and vomiting from time to time, with no rhyme or reason. Although not fatal, these symptoms might very well be related to these plants and most importantly to dangerous insecticides. Remember, small breeds, and young puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable.

Gospel Brunch! Sisters in Drag!

Tootie, Kiki, Gigi and Justice comprise this amazing group of drag entertainers, and the “girls” shared their satirical interpretation of Gospel Brunch with the people of San Felipe on January 12. What an amazing show that was! Tootie was the pregnant nun, wearing a glittery habit and Converse tennis shoes, parading around the stage with a warm welcome to everyone. The show progressed and the “sisters”, donning what would sometimes be referred to as church dresses, came out clapping and dancing to soulful Baptist hymns. Clearly sacrilege and enormously hysterical! Kiki shocked the crowd coming out in a sexy gown showing her latest investment: BOOBS! Of course, there was no exposure, but she looked all-woman in this famous dress. Audience participation was encouraged when the nuns paraded into the crowd to collect some choir members. They put them in choir robes and danced them around the stage, laughing, singing and clapping their hands. Every soul in the room was laughing. Another satirical skit brought Tootie out dressed as a pregnant disgruntled housewife, singing about her man and the baby on the way. Next thing you know, the balloon belly popped and out flew this baby doll. She picked it up, loved it across the stage, laughter filled the air. Kiki does a great impression of a sixties-variety Carwash, with a wicked afro wig bigger than she was! Volunteers walked around selling raffle tickets for the cruise, and the stubs were used this day for door prizes: doggie stuff and LIPS t-shirts were among the gifts given out. It really was a great experience, the second drag event held in San Felipe to raise funds for us, and we look forward to their next visit. Halloween, San Felipe Style

Halloween is a big deal here in San Felipe. Who knew? Last year, I was amazed at how many parties and events happened in town. For instance, the Tattoo Rose Cafe’ held an art showing by Adrena Joyce, with killer “Day of the Dead” paintings and great food and costumes. Michael and Gail Gates hosted a fabulous costume party, and Denny and Sandi Flannigan did their Halloween thing at el Dorado Ranch, There was so much Halloween spirit and mystery that night---not to mention some really cool costumes, too.

I kind of felt like an observer though---kind of hesitant to get dressed up and fully participate. Unlike my ex-partner Mark, who got into full comic drag and went all over town. He was quite a hit, as some of you will remember.

So, this year, ZAPP and I are getting onboard with a “HOWL-O-WEEN MASQUERADE BALL & DANCE PARTY” at the BeachComber on the Malecon, Friday Night, October 31st, from 7-11pm---slated to be the scariest event of them all! Complete with live DJ, emcee, delicious hors d’oeuvres and seasonal treats prepared by Chef Mark and donated by Sundance. Dance contests and costume contests with great prizes. Adrena Joyce will debut her new collection of “DAY of the DEAD” paintings. All in an effort to raise funds for ZAPP’s 2009 Spay/Neuter Project. Come on, join us and let’s party! Tickets are $20. First Howl-O-Ween Fundraiser Meeting

Hi all,

Just an update, as quick and short as I can!

Our First Howl-O-Ween Fundraiser Meeting is this Thursday, September 4th,10am, at Sundance Deli. We are holding a Masquerade Ball and Dance Contest at the BeachComber, Friday Night, Ocotober 31st. 7-11pm.

We are going to have a blast!!

We did 36 spays and neuters this past Saturday at our clinic. We will be doing 15 more cats and kittens next Wednesday at Dr Solis's Clinc, which will bring the total to 51. It was a quiet Saturday, although 95% of attendees were Mexican pets, so the word is really out there! The lower turnout was probably due to the Labor Day Weekend, and the weather.

We had a fun day, lots of laughing and carrying on....what a crazy group, my kind of people~~thanks to Laurie Barszcz, Carole Kingaby, Marci Parra, June Martin, Joannie Rude, Jacquie Cole, Dennis & Judy Bishop, Alec Sheridan, and special thanks to Luz Elena Casteneda for changing her plans and filling in for vacationing Caroleanne Burns.

Next Clinic is Saturday, September 20th. Then October 11 & 25,

November 8 & 22nd and December 13th.

Founded in 2007

ZAPP’s Mission: to Spay and Neuter 100+ dogs, cats, kittens and puppies each and every month in San Felipe, until we reach zero population growth. ZAPP is not a sanctuary or a rescue, but rather a Sterilization Project, run by local volunteers. ZAPP does however, give assistance to indigent dogs and cats when funds are available to us. We will do our best to pay for euthanasia, when absolutely necessary, and surgery that is often cost prohibitive. We are a no-kill organization.

In San Felipe, we only employ the services of Dr Antonio Solis of the University of Baja Veterinary School. We will not authorize any expenditure from other vets.

ZAPP is committed to providing a safe haven, and a bridge to insure that all of San Felipe’s puppies and kittens have a reasonable chance at a future.

ZAPP never says no to puppies and kittens under eight weeks old.

ZAPP’s Puppy Place on the highway is a perfect location for us. It’s extremely convenient for volunteers. There are eight kennels, which we use as holding pens for puppies and kittens in transition, during which time we vaccinate and worm; and spay or neuter each puppy and kitten. Next, those puppies or kittens go to the PETCO store in El Centro for adoption. Because of the “cuteness factor” the adoption process needs to happen early on. ZAPP charges $60 for adoptions at PETCO, however, when deemed appropriate, we simply give puppies and kittens away to interested people, rather than bring them back to San Felipe where their future is far more uncertain.

ZAPP’s Puppy Project and Kitten Project have a somewhat different age criterion for acceptance. ZAPP’s Puppy Place only takes puppies that are eight weeks or less. Kittens are more adoptable because they stay smaller far longer, and can be accepted somewhat older. We do not accept any street dogs or cats for housing, care or boarding at the Puppy Place. We simply cannot afford to run a rescue or sanctuary. We only have eight kennels, and they are restricted to puppies and kittens in transition ONLY!

Foster care is one of the ways we show our commitment to animals. Please, do not put ZAPP in a position where we have to reject an animal that does not fit our criteria. We already feel bad enough about our situation---we do not need any additional guilt. Our lives and our world are our responsibility. No one else has the power to step-in, and there’s no one to blame. Kindness breeds kindness. As animal advocates we need to do whatever it takes. Everyone needs to be part of an overall solution. If you are concerned for a dog or cat’s well being, then please provide food, give them shelter and make them feel safe. ZAPP will “fix” them and do whatever else we can. We’re not ever going to be able to save them all, but with the help of this community, we can certainly get our population under control, and ultimately get ahead of the “production line” and “replacement rate.”

ZAPP hopes to complete our end of the bargain over the next three years, whereby we have successfully gotten ahead of the problem, at which point, we will expect some other advocate group to step up and take over, providing a maintenance program to keep the dog and cat population under control.

Hi Everyone! Good News!

Once again, thru the efforts of Diane & Sam Grubb, and Donna Roberts, ZAPP now has a safe, secure place to keep puppies and kittens. As you know, the San Felipe Animal Rescue site in Las Minitas is officially closed and we were told that no more dogs can go thru the gate. We were also told that any puppies that do not get adopted at the new PETCO store in el Centro this weekend would come back to San Felipe and have no place to go.

Well, thanks to Sam, Diane and Donna, we now have a temporary facility right on the highway heading north, just out of town. The Grubbs and Donna Roberts own a property there that was built specifically for a couple that never moved in. He is a Vet from Sacramento, so there are eight custom built existing concrete kennels that will be awesome, complete with water and cyclone security gate. Someone already lives in the house at night, which is also ideal....

We do need a couple of things done right away to make it ready for immediate puppy and kitten occupancy. The space is small and well built, but needs shelter from the sun...there are some corrugated metal panels that could be a roof, and the kennels, although segrated from one another, need closures on the front of each one, so puppies and kittens do not mix and co-habitate....if you can give us a hand, please respond ASAP and we'll meet at the new

"ZAPP PUPPY HABITAT"
